Alaska

Language

  • Alaska has some 20 distinct languages, most within two main language groups. The two groupings include Inuit-Unangan (a.k.a. Eskimo-Aleut) and Na-Dene (a.k.a. Athabasan-Eyak-Tlingit). English is widely spoken.

Time Zone

  • The climate of Fairbanks is cold continental, with freezing winters and mild summers. Fairbanks is the second largest city in Alaska and is located in the center of the state, at 64 degrees north latitude, on the banks of the Tanana River, a tributary of the Yukon.

  • Medical insurance is recommended when traveling to Alaska but not required.

  • Take note that although all tourism workers are paid a fixed salary, tips are used as their main income. It is considerate to tip your tourism workers although it is not required. Tourism workers should only be tipped if exceptional service is provided.

The Northern Lights most commonly appear between 17:00 and 02:00. They don’t usually exhibit for long – they may only show for a few minutes, then glide away before returning.

Every night is different and a lot depends on cloud cover alongside other factors.

How do I photograph the Northern Lights?

There are a few basic principles to consider when it comes to capturing the Northern Lights, from having the right equipment to making sure your camera is steady enough to capture the magical light show above.

How are the Northern Lights created?

The light show we see from the ground is caused by electrically charged particles from space entering the Earth’s upper atmosphere at a very high speed.

Does moonlight affect the Northern Lights visibility?

If you want to see how a full display develops, it’s best to go around the time of the new moon.
