  • Nassau has a tropical monsoon climate, bordering on a tropical savanna climate, with hot wet summers, and mild dry winters. Temperatures are relatively consistent throughout the course of the year.

  • Medical insurance is recommended when traveling to The Bahamas but not required.

Tips

  • Take note that although all tourism workers are paid a fixed salary, tips are used as their main income. It is considerate to tip your tourism workers although it is not required. Tourism workers should only be tipped if exceptional service is provided.

  • The legal currency in The Bahamas is the Bahamian dollar (BSD). 1 US dollar is equal to 1 Bahamian dollars.

DO I NEED A PASSPORT TO ENTER THE BAHAMAS?

All visitors will require a passport to enter the country, and upon arriving in Nassau Paradise Island, everyone must fill out an immigration form and complete an oral baggage declaration.

WHAT SHOULD I PACK?

For daytime, casual summer wear will work great: shorts and T-shirts, light dresses, or lightweight pants are all great options, paired with comfortable walking shoes (sandals or sneakers are good choices). For evening, pack some nice dinner outfits (jackets and pants for men, dresses or jumpsuits for women). While it’s a beachy destination, save your swimsuits for the beach or pool only! And, if you’re traveling during the winter, late fall, or early spring, pack a sweater or a lightweight jacket – evenings and early morning breezes can feel a bit chilly. Pack plenty of sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses, including children’s options if you’re traveling with kids.

Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas. It lies on the island of New Providence, with neighboring Paradise Island accessible via Nassau Harbor bridges. A popular cruise-ship stop, the city has a hilly landscape and is known for beaches as well as its offshore coral reefs, popular for diving and snorkeling. It retains many of its typical pastel-colored British colonial buildings, like the pink-hued Government House.
