Alaska

Language

Alaska has some 20 distinct languages, most within two main language groups. The two groupings include Inuit-Unangan (a.k.a. Eskimo-Aleut) and Na-Dene (a.k.a. Athabasan-Eyak-Tlingit). English is widely spoken.

Meet your Alaska Tour representative Anchorage this morning. Meeting location will be confirmed at time of booking. Enjoy a scenic drive south along Turnagain Arm and into the Chugach State Park and National Forest areas, where you'll embark on a beautiful guided hike complete with a delicious lunch in nature. Then we'll continue to the quaint community of Cooper Landing, home to Kenai Riverside Lodge. Arrive at the lodge this afternoon, in time to get settled before dinner and trip orientation. Overnight at Kenai Riverside Lodge.

Turnagain Arm is a waterway into the northwestern part of the Gulf of Alaska. It is one of two narrow branches at the north end of Cook Inlet, the other being Knik Arm. Turnagain is subject to climate extremes and large tide ranges.

Spend a full day exploring the remote wilderness of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. Hike the Cottonwood Creek Trail and travel through several fascinating ecological communities. At the top of the trail, explore the alpine tundra and enjoy splendid views of Skilak Lake and the surrounding wilderness. Return to the lodge in the afternoon and enjoy the wood-fired sauna or simply relax at the lodge. Depending on the weather, options for the evening may include an evening sunset kayak under the Midnight Sun or a fireside natural history presentation by one of the lodge's guides.

Head out on this 5.2-mile out-and-back trail near Kasilof, Alaska. Generally considered a challenging route, it takes an average of 3 h 38 min to complete. This trail is great for hiking, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring.

Skilak Lake is a large lake on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. The lake is part of the Kenai River system but also contains glacial runoff, being fed by meltwater from Skilak Glacier. The water is exceptionally clear with a mostly rocky bottom, relatively free of aquatic vegetation
