Language

  • The official language in the Maldives  is Dhivehi or Maldivian, an Indo-Aryan language closely related to the Sinhala language of Sri Lanka.  although many locals speak English.

Time Zone

  • The Maldives are 6 hours ahead of our local Salt Lake City mountain time zone.

Electricity

  • There are two associated plug types in the Maldives, Type D and C. Be sure to purchase an adapter or wall socket when traveling from the USA.

Climate

  • Due to its location over the equator in the Indian Ocean, Maldives experiences a typical equatorial monsoonal climate. Maldives experiences warm and humid climate throughout the year, with seasonal fluctuations in temperature and rainfall due to the monsoon.

Health

  • Medical insurance is recommended when traveling to The Maldives but not required.

Tips

  • Take note that although all tourism workers are paid a fixed salary, tips are used as their main income. It is considerate to tip your tourism workers although it is not required. Tourism workers should only be tipped if exceptional service is provided.

Currency

  • Bali's currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa  (MVR). 1 US dollars equal approximately = 15.4 MVR.

Do they have ATMs, and can I use my credit card?

ATM machines can be found all across Malé and at the international airport. However, ATMS are limited and even non-existent on some resort islands.

Do I need a passport and visa?

Passports are required for tourists visiting from outside of the Maldives. Tourists staying in the Maldives for less than 30 days will be issued a free visa on arrival.
