Ecuador

Language

  • The official language of Ecuador is Spanish. In some regions, indigenous languages such as Kichwa and Shuar are also spoken.

Time Zone

  • Ecuador is 1 hour ahead of Salt Lake City mountain time (during daylight saving time). However, the Galápagos Islands are 2 hours behind mainland Ecuador.

Electricity

  • The power plug sockets used in Ecuador are Type A and Type B.

Climate

  • Ecuador’s climate varies by region. The coast and Amazon have hot and humid weather year-round, while the highlands experience mild days and cooler nights due to the elevation. The Galápagos Islands enjoy a subtropical climate, with a dry season from June to December and a wet season from January to May.

Health

  • Medical insurance is recommended when traveling to Ecuador but not required. Some regions, such as the Amazon, may require or suggest vaccinations like yellow fever. Tap water is not considered safe to drink, so use bottled or filtered water.

Tips

  • Tipping in Ecuador is appreciated but not mandatory. Many restaurants automatically include a 10% service charge. If not, a 5–10% tip is customary for good service. Rounding up taxi fares is also common.

Currency

  • The legal currency in Ecuador is the United States Dollar (USD). Ecuador mints its own coins, but bills are the same as those used in the U.S.

Transportation

  • Ecuador has a wide-reaching and affordable public transportation system. Buses are the most common mode of travel between cities and regions. Domestic flights are available for destinations like the Galápagos Islands. Taxis and ride-sharing apps like Uber are available in larger cities. Negotiate or confirm the fare before riding a taxi, as not all use meters.

Cash vs. Credit Cards

  • While credit cards are accepted in larger cities and tourist areas, Ecuador is still largely a cash-based society, especially in rural towns and markets. ATMs are widely available and most reliable in banks or large stores.

Etiquette

  • Politeness is important in Ecuador. It is customary to greet people with a handshake or, among friends, a cheek kiss. Dressing modestly is appreciated in churches and rural areas. Respect for elders and hospitality is a strong part of the culture.

Public Transportation Etiquette

  • When using public transportation, give up your seat for the elderly, pregnant women, or people with disabilities. Keep conversations quiet, and be mindful of your belongings to avoid petty theft in crowded areas.

Safety

  • Ecuador is generally a safe country for travelers. While violent crime is rare in tourist areas, petty crime like pickpocketing can occur in crowded places. Stay aware of your surroundings, especially in busy markets, buses, and city centers.

Waste Disposal

  • Ecuador’s waste disposal and recycling systems vary by city. Public trash bins are not always available, so it’s a good idea to carry a small bag to store your trash until you can dispose of it properly.

Cultural Norms

  • It is considered impolite to speak loudly in public spaces or to ignore greetings. When entering someone’s home, wait to be invited in and greet each person individually. Public displays of affection are acceptable but usually kept modest.

Seasons and Packing

  • Highlands: Cool days and chilly nights – pack layers. Coast and Amazon: Hot and humid – pack light clothing, insect repellent, and rain gear. Galápagos: Casual clothing, sunscreen, hat, and swimwear are musts.

Hot Springs (Onsen) Etiquette

  • When visiting Ecuador’s hot springs (such as those in Baños), wearing a bathing suit is required. You must shower before entering the pools, and respectful behavior is expected. Some spas may charge extra for towel or locker rentals.

Business Hours

  • Most shops and businesses in Ecuador operate from 9 AM to 6 PM, often with a lunch break between 1 and 2 PM. Tourist attractions, churches, and museums typically close by 4 or 5 PM, so plan accordingly.

I was very pleased with the service that I received from evolution35 travel company. Our 9 day trip to Cancún was wonderful time in this beautiful country. The resorts that evolution35 chose for our stay were all wonderful! Evolution35 people was in constant communication with us via email and WhatsApp asking how the trip was going and if we had any concerns or requests and when I did have a request they responded immediately and took care of it. Everything including tours and transportation were taken care of for us so it was very relaxing knowing we did not have to think about anything except when and where we were going next. Evolution35 also worked hard to ensure that we have a wonderful time during our stay in Cancun an that we return home safe. We are planing a trip to Costa Rica with Evolution35 in October.

Our Happy Clients

The Paris 99 trip was great. We enjoyed the driving tour of Paris, although we did fall asleep a few times as we were tired from the overnight flight from SLC. Our guide, Pedro, provided excellent information on the history of Paris and the sites we saw. The tour of Versailles was excellent, but we do wish we could have spent a little more time there. The Eifel Tower was amazing but felt a little rushed. The dinner on the Seine was excellent. Thank you for a great trip.

We did the Costa Rica trip and it was incredible. Zipline, rainforest, boat rides, catamaran. It
was soooo much trip for the money. Loved the hotel Tabacón with the hot springs and the
Westin was also 5 star! You go from the Carribean side to the Pacific. It's the trip of a
lifetime. Well done evolution35

Fantastic trip to Paris with Evolution 35. Between booking our trip and the time we left, we had lots of questions and they were always so quick to respond to our emails. It was so wonderful that they took care of many details of our trip for us, especially the first couple of days as we were getting oriented in a foreign place! Our tour guide was hilarious and knowledgeable. He helped us stay safe and have a lot of fun too! A great experience for us!

¡Gracias!
